Muscle Building Plus Weight Loss Diet is Magic Combo
There is a reason that everyone since the beginning of time has recommended combining a sensible weight loss diet with a great exercise program. This article will discuss the reasons for this compelling combination.
Overweight people are prone to medical problems. A recent report indicated that over 300,000 people died last year from weight related illnesses. This refers to people from a cross section of the community who have a BMI or body mass index of 25-29 which to many experts is considered overweight.
With over 25% of the US considered obese, the disease of obesity is killing peeople. People that are overweight struggle with sleep problems, breathing problems, susceptibility to disease and illness, chronic fatigue not to mention a low self-esteem because the media peddles people who are obese as abnormal and those that are skinny as the ideal.
No one factor can explain obesity. One of them is eating more than the body is breaking down through the normal body metabolism. This causes excess fat to accumulate in many cases in the belly area and cause someone to be overweight.
Some people gain weight because of a genetically slow metabolism. For most overweight people, their excess weight comes from both a slower metabolism and a lifestyle with very little movement. In the US, a lot of people live this life because of using their cars even for relatively small distances. This is where combining a sound exercise regime with a well planned weight loss diet can make a big difference.
A few lucky people can eat what they want and never gain weight, but the vast majority of us need to jump start our metabolism with exercise.
Now, you might think that aerobic exercise is an important part of boosting your metabolism; and that would be right! Provided that, of course, your qualified doctor confirms that you’re able to start a program of cardiovascular exercise, this is indeed the place to start. Increasing heart rate, blood circulation, body temperature, and oxygen intake/carbon dioxide exchange all send messages to the system to initiative catabolism (breaking down cells and using them for energy.
Yet if cardiovascular exercising is the place to start, does that mean that it’s the place to end? No! Too many add this cardiovascular component, but miss the benefits of going to the next step.
Not because they’re lazy; but because, frankly, they don’t know that there is significantly more that they can do in their home gym, or at the fitness club, that will boost their metabolism even more potently.
Let’s talk about what those next steps should be.
Grow Muscle
Many people – particularly some women – are very leery about undertaking any exercise regimen that can lead to muscle building. The old perception was that muscle building leads to muscle bulking, and before long, gorging forearm veins and other unwanted results.
This is really not a problem. Unless a woman is taking special muscle-enhancing supplements, she shouldn’t have an issue with bulking up.
So why should people incorporate muscle building? Isn’t aerobic movement the one that matters? No, it is not. In addition to a healthy and responsible cardiovascular program, muscle building is an exceptionally powerful way to boost metabolism.
How? Because a pound of muscle burns more calories than a pound of fat. And what does this mean? It means that every muscle you grow from exercise will be helping you burn calories – even when you sleep. You can even sleep and burn more calories. Simply, muscle burns more calories than fat. Of course, as you can infer, if you build muscle and then leave it alone, over time, the muscle fibers will weaken and you’ll lose that wonderful calorie-burning factory. Maintaining those muscles is a simple as keeping up your new good habits in muscle building.
Strength training will, itself, burn more calories. Ride in the car and burn more calories.
Just get in the habit of building muscle even if you carry a little extra fat now. Yes, you should enjoy cardiovascular exercise too, because that’s ultimately how your body is going to burn existing fat. But muscle building plays a critically supportive role in that quest. And it’s an exponential one, too: the more fat you transform into muscle, the more calories you’ll burn simply to maintain that new muscle (and the wonderful cycle goes on and on!).
